Work Experience
The HTM program has really prepared me to be ready for the real world. The Kaleidoscopic competencies have been a huge part of my career. From spirit of optimism, to time management and many more competencies that have really shaped me into a stronger person. My first hotel experience was at the Marriott Marquis and Marina as a Banquet Attendant. Although it was a level entry position, I was very excited when I applied and received a call the next day because that’s such a huge company so I thought it would be a great start. However, I did not fall in love with the job and found out that it was not the right fit for me. I can definitely say that I learned so much from what goes on behind the scenes, I believe every student should experience that because you will either love or hate that position. After working for almost a year at the Marriott Marquis, I moved to Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites to complete my 398 & 498 internships as a Front Desk Agent. It’s funny how things work…while everyone dreaded being at the front desk for a few months to complete 398, I did not hate it as much as other students did. I definitely do not want to stick to that position as a career, but I believe that it has taught me things that I never thought I would know today. While banquets is all about working behind the scenes to get ready for the show, the front desk puts on the actual show. At first, I thought front desk is all about checking people in and out, but I found out that is it much more than that. You are the heart of the hotel and have to work and cooperate with all the different departments in the hotel. As this semester comes to an end, I am officially hired at the Hilton by San Diego Airport as a Sales and Catering Administrator. After completing writing about my work experience in this section, I got the phone call two days ago with such amazing news! I am now so excited to be able to work for the Hilton and become one step closer to my future career.
