Your big WHY? I am extremely passionate about the Hospitality and Tourism Industry. I want to be able to provide exceptional service for every single person I meet or will work with in the future. Becoming a Wedding Planner certainly requires hard work and determination; however, it is very rewarding which is another reason why I want to do this. I want to be able to be a part of people’s biggest day of their lives and see the smile on their faces when they see my work and how beautiful the results will look like. I love making others happy, and to find a career that is all about making people smile is so motivating to me. Additionally, to become a Wedding Planner you need to be thoughtful, creative and different. I want to be able to provide uniqueness to every single wedding I will plan in the future. For example, some couples will not have an idea of what they want to incorporate in their wedding, I want to be the person who will help guide them throughout the planning process. All in all, this job is one of the most rewarding jobs, and I cannot wait to know and see how it feels.

Your Network: I have met two Wedding Planners and volunteered at two weddings throughout this semester. Ashley Frederickson and Widad Yousif have an outstanding background with weddings and they have helped me tremendously. They have given me tips on how to become successful for this career and I plan on keeping in touch with them. I plan on interning with Wedding Planners in the future to expand my knowledge of what other things I need to know to become a successful planner. I am willing to make personal connections with these people because I know they will benefit myself and my career as well.

Experience: I am currently a Banquet Attendant at the Marriott Marquis San Diego and Marina. My main task is setting up for the event such as bringing the food from the kitchen to the servers, putting tablecloths on tables, arranging table placements and being the person who is in the back of the house who is responsible to make sure that everything is not missing for the front of the house. I have not had any experience for internships, however, I have volunteered at several places this semester. I have volunteered at two Weddings, a Film Festival, and a Crew Classics Surveying Event. Some of the skills I have gained are patience, courage, and determination. When I volunteered at one of the Weddings, the bride wasn’t satisfied with where the cake was placed, however, the Coordinator and I just listened to what the bride wanted and both sides ended up being happy at the end. This taught me how to be patient, although things weren’t very simple in the beginning, it ended up working out at the end. Another example is the time I volunteered at the Crew Classics, my job was to go up to people, introduce myself and survey them on questions about the event. Some people were nice and others were very impatient and did not want to give me the time to answer a few simple questions. I learned to be courageous, and not to be shy to go up to people and introduce myself. I was also determined on getting my job done no matter how people were treating me. All in all, I have become a stronger individual from the working at the Marriott and volunteering at multiple events.

Execution Strategies: Working at the Marriott Marquis has given me an outstanding experience and a feel of what it’s like to work at a hotel. The position I am in right now is an entry-level position. I want to build my way up the ladder and continue to grow. Ashley Frederickson has offered me a six-month internship with her over the summer. I want to take the offer and learn from her since she has been a Wedding Planner for years. Ashley has told me that an assistant that works by her interned with her and she hired her to become her assistant because she was so bright and creative. Therefore, I want to prove to Ashley that I can stand out as well. Being an assistant will give me an incredible experience in the weddings industry and I believe that it will be a very thrilling experience. After that, my plan is to learn how become a florist. I have always had a passion for crafts and creating things from scratch, and to be able to learn that makes me look forward to do this. I believe learning how to become a florist will enhance my knowledge and since I am planning on becoming a Wedding Planner, it would be a wonderful experience that I can put on my resume.

Ideal Company: If I had to choose what my ideal company would be, I would choose the Marriott. The reason why I would choose the Marriott is because the organization works with integrity, provides excellence for all guests and lastly, they are family oriented which is most important to me. Working around people in an organization who you can call family and not just coworkers is very important, especially at such a huge and a known organization. I believe that being surrounded by people who treat you more of a family member rather than a coworker will create a better environment and atmosphere for everyone around you. In the future, I hope to create my own company that will have an outstanding team as well. I want everyone to be able to voice their own opinions, be honest, open, and bold. I aspire to create a successful company that will stand out and shine from all the other companies out there.

Ideal Professional Self: If I had to choose a phrase of my ideal professional self in 25 words or less, I would choose: “An HTM Masters individual who works so hard and is willing to go great lengths to please and help people.” I want others to see me as a person who is willing to go the extra mile to ensure that all their needs are met. In the future, I want to be described as honest, friendly, different, caring and professional. I will make sure to continue to grow on developing these skills for people to recognize what I would do to satisfy their needs.

Career Building - HTM 201
Work Experience
Hello everyone, welcome to my blog! My name is Sofia Alsindy and I am 22 years old. I was born and raised in Iraq, Baghdad but I moved to San Diego 9 years ago and I absolutely love living here. Moving here was definitely a struggle at first but with the time and patience I had I overcame all the difficulties I faced.
I got accepted to San Diego State University in the Fall of 2016, and here I am loving every second of it! I am currently studying Hospitality and Tourism Management specifically in Events and Management Operations. I remember a year ago when I went to my counselor not knowing what I wanted to do, but I discovered that I had a passion for making people’s events a memorable one that will live inside their hearts forever. I love to plan events and make the whole venue look perfect so I decided to go with this emphasis.
I worked in retail for 3 years but I realized that I need to move on with my career and start a chapter of something new. The closest experience I have with this field is working at Menchies Frozen Yogurt back in 2013. Dealing with food is very necessary in this field because you get to handle all kinds of food and see how important it is in this industry. As of now, I am working at The Marriott Marquis and Marina as a Banquet Attendant. I am very pleased to work for this company and finally begin to do something related to my major, in fact, I’ve been with the company for only 2 weeks but so far, I am enjoying it! My job duties are things such as preparing coffee breaks, carts and stations with foods and beverages as stated in the Banquet Event Order. In addition, I must maintain sanitation and organization at all times. I also have to make sure to follow the procedures and make sure I am on time to deliver all the supplies needed for the events at the appropriate time. This position requires a lot of walking and being in a fast paced environment. In the future, I hope to move to the Events and Managements department at the Marriott when I have more experience as a Banquet Attendant. My goal and dream job would be planning events, such as business meetings, conferences, but my personal favorite would be weddings and internationally, too! What better thing is there to do than traveling and doing something that you love? It is true when they say “you never have to work a day in your life doing something that you love”. I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it!
HTM Student Advisor Meeting
Talking to an HTM advisor is definitely important so students can see how they’re doing and if they’re on the right track. Rachel Lampre was my advisor and she was very informative with all the information she provided for me. Some of the future courses that Rachel suggested I should take for spring 2017 are HTM 301, HTM 330, HTM 380, HTM 398 and BA 350. Since my previous community college did not offer HTM 201, HTM 223, or HTM 250, I am still in lower division and I cannot move to upper division until spring 2017.
My advisor, Rachel, recommended to take an elective with those classes so I am not only taking HTM courses, The reason she suggested that so I can have a fun class that I would need to finish for my GE anyways. Rachel guided me through me through a booklet with all the information I need to know about L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality & Tourism Management. She recommended to always sit on “the couches” because it is a great opportunity to ask questions, get to know other HTM students, meet faculty, staff and industry professionals. We also talked about studying abroad, she mentioned that it is an incredible experience that she will always remember throughout her lifetime and career. She recommended studying in Europe, and extending my trip so I can discover the country!
Another thing I learned from meeting with Rachel is to not waste time. For instance, enrolling in summer courses is a great way to stay on track or even be ahead of the game! Rachel also suggested the different kinds of minors that I could do such as accounting, finance, marketing, real estate, management or information systems. I am interested in management so that would be the most one I would consider minoring in. Some pathways to excellence Rachel shared with me were to always volunteer, seek scholarships, be active in associations or events and lastly, stay informed. I definitely think these are all important factors that will help me succeed in my future career. All in all, I learned a lot from Rachel, she did a wonderful job going over everything I need to know before graduation, and I will definitely keep in mind everything that she went over today!

Academic and Career Objectives
Getting involved and networking are the two most important things I learned throughout this semester. Within next semester, I am going to work harder and put more effort in everything I do in order to get a promotion at work. Currently, I am a banquet attendant at the Marriott Marquis, and therefore, it is very possible to get promoted after 6 months. I definitely want to move up the ladder from now, so when I graduate I am ready for a bigger position. Since I am employed at the Marriott, I have an opportunity to try out a different position after 6 months of working as a banquet attendant. I am planning on getting a job shadow for the Event and Managements department, and also, a front desk as well. I want to be able to try out as many jobs as I can before I stick to one, because at the end of the day, that will make me decide what I would be the most passionate about.
Some immediate objectives I set for myself are:
1) Get more involved from the time I have left of this semester until the spring semester.
2) Attend more related hospitality meetings.
3) Sit on the couches more often.
4) Join a club that relates to HTM.
5) Volunteer for any HTM related work.
6) Get as many internships as possible.
Some career objectives I set for myself that I hope to achieve within the next (2-3 years) are:
1) Graduate May 2018 with a 3.0!
2) Work more hours at my job and proving myself, that way, my manager has a good impression of me and knows that I am taking my job seriously.
3) Talk to my manager to move up to the Events Management department, start planning smaller events before I plan bigger ones.
4) Become an Events& Management captain.
5) Expand my interests, try out different opportunities that I find the most stimulating. Meaning, apply for all kinds of jobs that grab my attention, not sticking to only one.
6) Apply for management positions.
